Tell me “How”!

It was 2006, maybe 2007 when I found the “Golden Circle”, by Simon Sinek.

The whole exercise made so much sense, particularly because I was working for a company that gave me a very strong sense of purpose.

Years later, my work-life changed significantly, and I’ve been investing a lot of time figuring out what really matters to me.

I read about Ikigai and finding purpose, I took the Simon Sinek exercise to find my “why”, and, sometimes U2 knows the best: “I still having found, what I’m looking for”.

Which is fine. If you have multiple interests as I do, you may have multiple purposes or may take more time to find yours.

Now I believe the Golden Circle should work in a different way (my own opinion):

1) Simplify the why in two groups: for profit companies are here to make money. Non-profits, to solve a problem.

2) The “how” is the key. Invest time to understand this part. Ideally this will be aligned with your values.

3) Select the companies you want to work for based on “what” they offer as a product or service.

Let me explain what I’ve learned: your purpose in life cannot be the company’s purpose, or their why. It is ok if they coincide.

Just keep in mind the 2 whys I mentioned above. This will make life easier and the relationship more transparent. You can still work for a non-profit and make enough money (or vice-versa).

Just bear with me as we discuss the practical stuff with two different scenarios.

You are looking for a job. Could be anywhere: oil, environmental solutions, retail. There’s no judgement here. You need/want to work and, ideally, it is aligned with your values (i.e.: kindness, respect, care for people).

There’s a bed and breakfast hiring and you get your interview. Yes, they want to make money!

Scenario 1: You show up for the interview and there is a sign at their reception saying: Because we believe people should have an unforgettable experience while traveling, relaxing in luxurious accommodations, while enjoying a healthy meal with a beautiful view.

Their “how”: Our amazing staff is here to take care of everything you need providing an unforgettable experience.

And their “what”: Each of our rooms are cozy, unique, luxurious and have a private spa/bathroom to relax in the end of the day. All of this, plus an amazing view of the ocean from our breakfast room to make your stay unforgettable.

Sold? I think so!

Scenario 2: You do your homework, and find out that the owners are rude with employees, don’t really give breaks and are always delaying salary to maintain their farm (my real experience while in retail). This is their “how”.

Is this aligned with your values? Would you like to work for this kind of place? If yes, good luck! You got your dream job!

Now, if you really believe in kindness and respect. If you love making people happy, then I don’t think you got the right job. Of course you may not have an option. We all have to bite the bullet many times in life.

See my point? If you don’t understand “how” this B&B works, you might be in trouble.

Knowing what I know today has opened my mind in many different ways. Do I have all the answers about my own journey? Absolutely not! I am still learning. And I am not sugar coating: it is not easy (although many people think I am always having fun) but worth it!
